TOKYO — With the massive “SWORD” campaign dropping new characters and a fresh league battle season currently underway, ONE PIECE Bounty Rush is drawing in waves of new players.
If you are seeing clips of the new Navy HQ characters like Prince Grus and Koby but aren't quite sure what you are looking at, you aren't alone. Here is a complete breakdown of what ONE PIECE Bounty Rush actually is, how it plays, and what you need to know about the current meta.
A 4v4 Capture the Flag Brawler
Released globally by Bandai Namco Entertainment for iOS and Android devices, ONE PIECE Bounty Rush is a free-to-play, real-time multiplayer mobile game (often abbreviated by the community as OPBR).
Rather than a traditional 2D fighting game or turn-based RPG, Bounty Rush operates like a 3D arena brawler mixed with MOBA elements. Players are grouped into teams of four and face off against a rival team of four online in frantic 3-minute matches. The primary objective is not just to defeat your opponents, but to capture and hold Treasure Areas (flags) scattered across 3D maps inspired by iconic One Piece locations, such as Alabasta, Wano, and Marineford. The team that holds the most treasure at the end of the time limit wins.
Character Classes and Strategy
To succeed in Bounty Rush, players must build a team of two characters and swap between them during the match. Characters are unlocked via a “gacha” system (using in-game currency called Rainbow Diamonds) and are divided into three specific classes that dictate their role on the battlefield:
- Attackers: Built for pure combat. Their primary job is to deal massive damage, KO enemy players, and clear the way for their team.
- Runners: Built for speed and mobility. Runners capture Treasure Areas significantly faster than other classes. (For example, the newly added Light-element Prince Grus is a Runner who uses a unique mechanical gimmick to create clay-based “Glorp-Glorp” areas.)
- Defenders: Built for holding ground. Defenders excel at staying inside captured Treasure Areas, utilizing high defense and knockback abilities to prevent the enemy from stealing the flag. (For example, the newly added Red-element Koby.)
Characters are also assigned color elements (Red, Blue, Green, Light, Dark) that operate on a rock-paper-scissors advantage system, forcing players to think strategically about their matchups before they load into a League Battle.
The Current Season: SWORD Takes Over
The game is constantly updated with new “Bounty Festival” and powerful “Extreme” (EX) character banners tied to the anime's ongoing story.
Currently sitting in Version 7.5 following its massive 7.5 Year Anniversary, the latest season is heavily focused on the Navy's secret “SWORD” unit. Bandai Namco recently introduced a wave of highly anticipated Marine officers, including Koby (Defender), Prince Grus (Runner), and Hibari (Runner). These new units are currently shaking up the competitive League Battles, allowing players to utilize unique new gimmicks — like Prince Grus's clay creations and Koby's “Honesty Impact” — to lock down the map.
