The open-zone formula has officially paid off in a massive way for the blue blur. For more Sonic and Sega coverage, see the Video Games Hub.

Sega announced today that Sonic Frontiers has officially surpassed 5 million copies sold globally across all platforms. Reaching this impressive milestone roughly three years and nine months after its initial November 2022 launch, the open-world action-platformer cements its status as one of the best-selling 3D Sonic titles of all time.

Sega took to their official channels to thank the fans, stating, "We've Found Our Flame, and it's you! Thank you for helping Sonic Frontiers surpass 5 MILLION copies sold!"

Free Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes for Everyone

To celebrate the massive sales milestone, Sega is delivering a wave of nostalgia straight to players' wardrobes.

Starting today, the iconic SOAP shoes from 2001's classic Sonic Adventure 2 are available completely for free to all Sonic Frontiers players. Previously, this highly coveted in-game cosmetic item was exclusively locked behind an email newsletter sign-up campaign that ended back in January 2023. Now, any player who boots up the game can grind rails in true early-2000s style.

The Definitive Edition Push on Switch 2

Sales of the game have seen a steady climb, recently bolstered by the franchise's ongoing 35th-anniversary celebrations.

A significant factor in the game's continued success is the recent release of Sonic Frontiers - Definitive Edition. In June 2026, Sega shadow-dropped this ultimate version of the game exclusively for the newly released Nintendo Switch 2.

While the original 2022 release struggled with performance on the original Nintendo Switch, the Definitive Edition on the Switch 2 boasts significantly improved graphics, a higher resolution, and smoother frame rates. The package serves as the complete Frontiers experience, bundling the base game with all three previously released major content updates: "Sights, Sounds, and Speed," "Sonic's Birthday Bash," and the challenging "The Final Horizon" story expansion.

Whether you are exploring the Starfall Islands for the first time on the Switch 2 or returning to tackle the brutal Master King Koco trial, you can now do it in the most iconic footwear in gaming history.
