Bungie deployed Marathon Update 1.0.0.4, the extraction shooter's first major balance pass since launch. The patch reduces UESC enemy health by 10-15%, cuts boss shield HP, caps thermal scope effective range, and disables two problematic map zones.
Marathon UESC Nerf | Enemy Health and Boss Shields Reduced
The UESC faction — widely considered overtuned for solo players — received across-the-board health reductions. Standard UESC units lost 10% HP, elite variants 12%, and the Traxus Contract UESC Commander boss had its shield pool cut by 20%. Bungie stated these changes aim to make solo extraction viable without trivializing group play.
Marathon Thermal Scope Nerf | Range Cap Introduced
Thermal scopes, which had become the dominant meta attachment, now have a hard range cap. Beyond 150 meters, thermal highlighting fades to zero, forcing snipers to reposition closer to targets. The change has already shifted the meta toward mid-range engagements.
Marathon Map Changes | Broken Wing and Pinwheel Outpost Disabled
Two zones — Broken Wing and Pinwheel Outpost — have been temporarily disabled due to exploit geometry that allowed players to clip through walls. Bungie expects to re-enable both zones in Update 1.0.0.5.
Additional changes include new Perimeter med cabinets and munitions crates, sponsored kits from MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne, and a fix for the Rook backpack duplication bug.
Why This Matters: Bungie's rapid balance response — this patch arrived within two weeks of launch — signals that Marathon is being treated as a live-service priority, not a side project. The speed and specificity of the changes suggest Bungie is closely monitoring player data and willing to make aggressive adjustments.
