Twenty-five years after the Master Chief first crash-landed on a mysterious, ring-shaped superweapon, the defining console shooter has been rebuilt from the ground up. For the full launch guide, see our Halo Campaign Evolved launch coverage.
Released in July 2026, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a comprehensive Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original 2001 classic, Halo: Combat Evolved. Developed by the newly rebranded Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, the game promises to deliver the authentic, nostalgic feel of the original alongside modern 4K visuals, fully overhauled cinematics, and brand-new prequel missions.
However, with such an ambitious undertaking comes intense scrutiny. From changes to iconic characters to the shifting multiplayer landscape, here is a deep dive into the team behind the game and the creative decisions driving the Master Chief's latest outing.
Will There Be Multiplayer?
To answer the biggest question on players' minds: No, Halo: Campaign Evolved does not feature traditional competitive Player vs. Player (PvP) multiplayer.
As the title implies, Halo Studios made the deliberate decision to eschew the original game's competitive modes to focus the entirety of their resources on refining the story campaign and expanding the cooperative experience.
However, multiplayer is not entirely absent. The game features incredibly robust cooperative multiplayer. Players can tackle the entire campaign, including the three brand-new Operation METEORITE missions, with up to four players online. This online co-op fully supports cross-platform play and cross-progression across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Furthermore, for fans of classic couch co-op, the game retains two-player local split-screen on consoles.

The Women Leading the Remake
Rebuilding a game with such a massive legacy in Unreal Engine 5 required a massive, highly skilled development team. While Halo: Campaign Evolved is co-directed by Max Szlagor and Greg Hermann, several prominent women across key leadership, design, and audio roles were instrumental in reshaping the Master Chief's journey.
| Halo Studios Leadership Role | Name |
|---|---|
Chief Operations Officer | Elizabeth Van Wyck |
Chief of Staff | Angela Hession |
Lead Gameplay Designer | Kat Neale |
Audio Director | Becky Allen |
Lead Technical Artist | Andrea Gausmann |
Unfortunately, the studio's inclusive development approach has been met with vocal online backlash from a subset of players. The controversy centered around the game's inclusion of more female Marine NPCs on the battlefield, the gender-swapping of a few minor characters, and a temporary bug at launch that accidentally made some female NPCs completely invincible to enemy gunfire. Halo Studios has since patched the invincibility bug, but the studio remains steadfast in its character design choices.
The Cortana Controversy | Why Does She Look and Sound Different?
One of the most fiercely debated aspects of the remake has been the visual and audio redesign of the Chief's iconic AI companion, Cortana.
If you boot up the game and immediately notice she looks different, you are not alone. Art Director Chris Matthews explained that the studio wanted to balance Cortana's original 2001 aesthetic with player expectations of who she becomes later in the franchise lore. As a result, the developers dropped her classic purple tint in favor of the more universally recognized electric blue holographic appearance. Many fans have also pointed out that her facial model and animations are softer, drawing comparisons to The Weapon from Halo Infinite.
Her voice lines have also been tweaked. Halo Studios completely re-recorded the game's audio with the principal voice cast. During this process, the developers deliberately removed some of Cortana's British slang, such as her iconic line "Sod off!".
According to the studio, the slang felt "too British" and was entirely inconsistent with how the character speaks throughout the rest of the franchise. Interestingly, this is not a new revelation. The original Bungie developers reportedly intended to re-record those exact same lines back in 2001 for the same lore-consistency reasons but simply ran out of time before shipping the original Xbox disc.
