007 First Light Story Breakdown | Ending Explained, Isola's Betrayal, and the 007 Reveal

IO Interactive delivers the best James Bond story since Casino Royale with a gritty origin that spans Iceland, Slovakia, Vietnam, and Antarctica before ending on an unforgettable Aston Martin chase and betrayal

||8 min read

Released in May 2026 by IO Interactive, 007 First Light is an entirely original narrative, completely separate from the films and Ian Fleming's novels. It tells the story of a 26-year-old, inexperienced James Bond (played by Patrick Gibson) as he attempts to earn his iconic license to kill. Here is the complete, spoiler-filled breakdown of the story and its explosive ending.

Warning: massive spoilers for the entire plot of the game follow below.

007 First Light Act I | Recruitment and the 00 Program

The story opens in Iceland, where Bond is serving as a Royal Navy aircrewman. Following an ambush on a Special Air Service team investigating a crashed satellite, Bond becomes the sole survivor. Defying direct orders from MI6, he single-handedly rescues captive scientists and destroys a mercenary camp to keep the satellite out of enemy hands.

His heroic, if reckless, actions catch the attention of M (Priyanga Burford), who recruits him into MI6's revitalized 00 program. Because Bond is reckless, impulsive, and raw, he is assigned to John Greenway (Lennie James), a hardened, reluctant instructor who views Bond as a massive liability but agrees to train him anyway.

007 First Light Act II | The Rogue Agent and Webb Industries

A few months into training, Bond and Greenway are dispatched to Slovakia to hunt down Rhys Beckett, a former 009 agent who has supposedly gone rogue. However, the mission goes sideways when a bomb detonates at their hotel, killing two other MI6 recruits and crippling another. The attack is orchestrated by twin assassins known as the Murtos.

Bond and Greenway soon discover that Beckett was actually the target of the bombing, not the mastermind, but all proof is destroyed. When M officially blames the dead Beckett for the attack and closes the case, Bond takes matters into his own hands. After surviving an assassination attempt at his home, Bond tracks the assassins to a gala hosted by Sir Nicholas Webb, a powerful AI pioneer.

Here, Bond discovers that Webb is the true mastermind. While infiltrating Webb Industries, Bond is captured by Webb's brutal son, Damien, a former PMC leader responsible for war crimes in central Africa. Bond is rescued by Charlotte Roth, aka Isola Vale, a French operative and professional thief who is also investigating Webb. Together with Greenway, they learn that Webb has been using MI6's predictive supercomputer, THEIA, to cover up his family's vast criminal enterprises.

007 First Light Act III | Vietnam and the Antarctica Raid

M sends Bond to a luxury resort in Vietnam to intercept Damien before he can murder a geneticist to cover up more of Webb's crimes. Bond saves the target and seemingly kills Damien by crushing him under heavy pipes, but the victory comes at a severe cost: Greenway is fatally wounded during the mission. In his dying moments, Greenway admits he was wrong about Bond, telling him that his heroic, selfless nature is exactly what MI6 needs.

Back in London, Webb blackmails M for full immunity by threatening to leak highly classified MI6 intelligence. Refusing to let Webb win, Bond goes completely rogue. He teams up with Isola to infiltrate Webb's secret facility in Antarctica, where they uncover Webb's ultimate plot: to use a sibling AI program called HYPERION to overthrow the British government entirely.

007 First Light Ending Explained | Isola's Betrayal

The finale of 007 First Light is a massive gauntlet of twists and betrayals. At the HYPERION core in Antarctica, Isola suddenly turns on Bond. She fatally shoots Sir Nicholas Webb herself and attempts to steal the HYPERION core. Bond manages to stop her and destroy the core, resulting in both of them being arrested and locked in holding cells at MI6 headquarters in London.

While they are in custody, mercenaries breach MI6 to steal the original THEIA computer core. In the chaos, Isola escapes.

007 First Light Final Boss | Damien Webb's Return

Damien Webb, having survived the events in Vietnam, breaches the facility wearing a high-tech exoskeleton suit and a golden mask. Damien takes Moneypenny hostage, stabs her, and escapes with the THEIA core.

Bond pursues Damien in a heavily weaponized Aston Martin Valhalla, battling through the streets before cornering him in London's underground sewers and reservoir. Bond manages to disable Damien's mech suit and throws both of them into the deep water below, intentionally drowning Damien as the suit shorts out.

007 First Light Final Twist | Isola's Rescue

A drowning Bond is suddenly pulled to the surface by Isola. However, she only saves him after securing the THEIA core for herself. She kisses Bond, tells him not to get used to it, and escapes into the night to deliver the AI to an unknown foreign employer.

007 First Light Final Scene | Earning the Number

In the epilogue at Greenway's grave, M arrives and informs Bond that he has been cleared of all insubordination charges. Acknowledging his immense skill and sacrifice, M formally inducts him into the 00 program. Because he was the seventh recruit in his class, Bond chooses the designation 007.

The game ends with Bond setting off to track down Isola to recover THEIA, perfectly setting up IO Interactive's inevitable sequel.

Why This Matters | IO Interactive Reinvents the Bond Formula

IO Interactive's decision to tell a vulnerable, origin-story Bond without the tuxedo, gadgets, or Q Branch was a massive creative risk that paid off. By grounding the narrative in a tech-conspiracy thriller about predictive AI, corporate impunity, and personal loss, the studio crafted a Bond story that feels both contemporary and emotionally resonant. The double betrayal by Isola Vale, first in Antarctica and again at the reservoir, elevates the story beyond a simple revenge plot. Bond does not win at the end. He survives, earns his number, and is immediately burdened with a sequel hook that promises the hunt for Isola and the THEIA core. For a franchise that has struggled to find its voice in the gaming space since GoldenEye 007 in 1997, 007 First Light is a landmark achievement.
